Dear NWIL-FCC members and friends,

I want to share with you five organizations that I have had correspondence from yesterday and today. They have established programs to facilitate donations to help the victims of the earthquake in Sichuan, China. I received the first one listed from one of our own NWIL-FCC members, Maleesa Myers, who is the co-founder and president of Global Child Advocates.
Thank you,
Melodie

GLOBAL CHILD ADVOCATES

A massive earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Sichuan province in China on Monday. Because of its magnitude and closeness to the earth’s surface, the quake released so much energy that it caused enormous loss of lives and massive destruction to a number of areas. As of 5/14/08 the death toll has exceeded 12,012 people, 7,841 are missing, 26,206 people are living in temporary shelters. Only 30 children of 900 have been rescued from the collapsed high school in Dujiangyan, Sichuan. At least 20 children were buried in the collapse of a primary school in Liangping, Chongqing.

Advocates from Kids Care Cultural Communications are asking for your kind financial donations to a special Earthquake Relief Fund being set up by Global Child Advocates, Inc. GCA will be working with the Chinese Government to ensure that your donation helps the children and families devastated by this disaster. This fund will provide direct aid to the thousands of children and families who are suffering in the wake of this disaster.

You can make a donation by going to www.globalchildadvocates.org and clicking on Donate (option 2). Your donation is tax deductible. You may also mail donations to:

OUR CHINESE DAUGHTERS FOUNDATION

Yes, we established an earthquake relief fund yesterday - donations can be made online through www.ocdf.org/orphansupport or by calling OCDF (paying by credit card): 309-829-8202 or 1-866-460-OCDF Toll Free or by mail (check): OCDF, 109 West Monroe St., Bloomington, IL 61701.

As per my other email listing orphanages, we have been in contact with most of the institutions in the region and are gathering information from other orphan support organizations as well. Many groups - Half the Sky, Care for Children, Children's Hope International, and others are scurrying to help as best as we all can.

Getting supplies to the region is important. Diapers are much-needed with water shut off and no ability to wash clothes and cloth diapers in Chengdu. Bottled water will also be needed for making formula. And, depending on how long it takes for stores to open, formula and other food supplies will also be needed.

We are working directly with the frontline people, the orphanage directors, and responding to their requests. We are able to send much-needed supplies to Chengdu through two channels - our staff in Chengdu who work full-time there (both Swallow and Lily have been reached at this point, both are fine) and via China Post (the postal service) as they are helping to transport supplies to Chengdu by truck and train which we are able to purchase readily in Beijing (since supplies are running short in Chengdu as shops open and local people gather for their needs) through Le You - a baby care company owned by Michelle Hu (with whom we regularly work for our orphan support projects).

OCDF will continue to check in with orphanage directors and report as we hear from them ). We are also working with the member organizations in BORN which we coordinate (The Beijing Orphan Resource Network) where groups like Care for Children (working with remote government institutions), Children's Hope International (working with children of poor families and children in need whether they be orphans or not), Half the Sky (working with the Ministry of Civil Affairs as needed), and others are making all efforts to assist in the earthquake region. Mable is in daily contact with as many of these organizations as is possible to see how we all can best interface.

HALF THE SKY

In cooperation with China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs, Half the Sky has set up the Children’s Earthquake Fund. The Fund will provide direct aid to the thousands of children who are suffering in the wake of the earthquake and aftershocks. Donations will be used to provide emergency and long-term relief to children affected by the disaster, including emergency shelter, food, and medical care for children orphaned or separated from their families, as well as temporary or long-term foster care or, if necessary, temporary institutional care. The ministry has guaranteed that the funds will be used only to help the children.

We have now set up a procedure whereby we can get an update from the
Ministry of Civil affairs each day. They are supervising all relief efforts
so have the most complete and accurate information available. We also now
have contact information for all affected welfare institutions and have
begun the process of reaching out to them directly to see if they need help.

You can donate to the fund by calling Half the Sky (+1 510 525 3377) or at one of two dedicated sites online:
